Fatal officer-involved shooting under investigation in Sheboygan

One person is dead after an officer involved  shooting near 15th and Illinois Avenue in the city of Sheboygan. The Sheboygan Police Department responded to a disturbance call near the intersection of S. 15th St and Illinois Ave July 2, around 5:50 a.m. The 911 caller reported one of the people involved in the disturbance was armed. Police made contact with the individual and a shooting occurred. The Police said the deceased is a male, but further details about their identity have not been released. Officers were uninjured in the incident.

Ordinance Reminders for the 4th of July

While Sheboygan’s official Independence Day activities have been canceled for 2020, the Sheboygan Police Department wishes to remind residents that there are several ordinances that may impact how they choose to celebrate the 4th this year. First, due to the cancellation, there will be no fires allowed on city beaches outside of the permanent fire rings. As in past years, excavations such as pits or trenches are prohibited on the beach as well. Possession and consumption of alcohol is also not allowed on any city beach, and without the festival events at Deland Park there will be no alcohol allowed in the grass area to the south of the pier walkway this year. Alcohol is allowed in Cleveland Park, End Park, Evergreen Park, King Park (excluding the beach), Kiwanis Park, Lakeview Park, and Veterans Park.

Ryan Sorenson elected as Common Council President

In a special City of Sheboygan Common Council meeting held Monday, Ryan Sorenson was elected to serve as Council President. The election was held to fill the position after former Council President, Todd Wolf, resigned from Common Council in order to be hired to the City Administrator Position. “I am grateful and humbled from the support that the council has entrusted me to lead the city Council during these challenging times. There is so much work that city needs to do, and we have so much room for growth and improvement. These are not easy times, but if we can come together as a community, we can make great progress.”Ryan Sorenson, City of Sheboygan Common Council President

In an interview with MySheboygan, Sorenson laid out some of the goals he hopes to lead common council towards from his new position.

Election to Fill Unexpired Term of City of Sheboygan Aldermanic District 2 Common Council Position

On June 19, 2020 a resignation was submitted for the City of Sheboygan District 2 Aldermanic position. Click HERE to view a map of the Aldermanic districts. At the July 6, 2020 Common Council meeting at 6:00 pm, the Council will conduct an election to fill the remainder of the term set to expire in April 2022. Any resident of District 2 that is interested in the opportunity to serve on the Common Council should submit a letter of interest and a brief resume to City Clerk Meredith DeBruin by 12:00 pm on Thursday, July 2, 2020. John Michael Kohler Arts Center announces programming (at a distance) in place of Levitt AMP concert series

The Sheboygan community may miss the live concert series this summer, but the John Michael Kohler Arts Center still plans to offer “a new kind of summer fun.” “Thursday Nights Together (at a Distance)” is new weekly music and arts programming that will take the place of the Levitt Amp concert series this summer. Beginning June 25th, Sheboygan residents should keep an eye open for pop-up concerts that will be performed aboard the Arts Center’s Culinary Art Car. It will be making surprise trips to city neighborhoods three times this summer. 

Playlists of music performed by artists featured in past Levitt AMP Sheboygan concerts will be streamed Thursdays, July 2–August 20 from 6:00–8:00 p.m. on Spotify. The Arts Center will also be hosting a weekly contest and providing weekly “Creating Care Kits” featuring different activities with new materials for participants to try at home.

Common Council seeks to appoint current council president Todd Wolf as City Administrator

In a special meeting to be held on tomorrow, June 22, at 6 pm, Sheboygan common council president Todd Wolf plans to resign from his position. Then, after a closed session final interview, common council will vote on a resolution submitted by Alderpersons Donahue and Sorenson to appoint Todd Wolf as the new City Administrator effective July 7. This latest reshuffling will take place after the current administrator, Darrell Hofland announced his July 3 retirement and submitted his resignation in late April. The City Administrator role was added in 2011 after the council stripped the mayor of certain duties in the wake of the Bob Ryan scandal. Since then, the position has been tasked with overseeing day-to-day operations in city departments, and except for a few remaining powers, the mayor’s office is mostly ceremonial.

Fourth COVID19 death reported in Sheboygan County

Sheboygan, WI — Sheboygan County Health and Human Services is reporting the county’s fourth death related to coronavirus. Unlike the previous three deaths within the county, the latest victim was not associated with a long term care facility and was in the 40-59 age group. In addition to the reported death, there are five new cases of the virus also being reported in the county. This news comes on the heels of Sheboygan County moving to “Phase Two” of the “Sheboygan County Safe Restart Guidelines” on Friday, June 5. Under Phase Two non-essential businesses such as restaurants and bars choosing to adhere to the guidelines are limiting capacity to 50%, which is up from 25% under Phase One.
